I wish I had more to write today but I got a little carried away by a personal mini-challenge. I have mentioned before that I like to read but that I am, this feels like the wrong words, a slow reader. It takes me weeks to get through a book because I am usually doing other things where I can better multi-task, no simul-task. I knit while watching tv, often with the dishwasher or washing machine going. This afternoon, evening and into tonight I have single-tasked. I have read. I have occasionally stopped to make tea or reply to a text message but for the bulk of my time I have read.
I can only name a handful of books I have ever read where I have let myself do this. I love doing it every now and again. Although I feel a mild version of guilt at getting nothing else done, taking a break from my life, from my thoughts and worries, as well as feeling like a mini-holiday it also acts as a kind of re-set for me.
So, what is this book that has held my attention and kept me riveted to the chair? The Hunger Games.
I went shopping for a couple of bits and pieces in Tesco after work and saw the book for less than rrp. I debated with myself but in the end, I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I knew very little of the book going in, just the bare outline as seen because the film is out (from today strangely). I set myself the mini-challenge of reading it as fast as I can, provided I was enjoying it – in keeping with the other goals of not doing things that aren’t fun unless they are completely necessary. I want to finish the book before I see the film. I almost never do that. Twilight I read after a friend taking me to see the film but the rest of the series I read first. I think the only big film I can think of where I read every book first is the Harry Potter series. I am 2/3s of the way through The Hunger Games now and will almost certainly read more before sleep tonight.
I am really enjoying it and I will post a proper spoiler free review tomorrow. I have a big day planned tomorrow. I have a lot of cleaning and tidying to do. I’ve gotten behind. It is also a free listings weekend on eBay UK so I am going to see if I can find some things to list for fun. I want to get a lot done on the sock too. Big things planned. But after I finish reading this book! See? there is another incentive to read it quickly! I might be getting a break from my life for a few hours but the world keeps turning, I don’t want it to move on too far without me.
ps. May the odds be ever in your favour!
